Celebrating the apple harvest

There’s a palpable buzz at Luscombe this week… the apple press is whirring away and the sweet aroma of fresh juice in the air reminds us how much we love this time of year – the apple harvest!

Working hand-in-hand with the seasons is a really important part of what we do and helps us to create the finest whole fruit soft drinks. Luscombe’s founder, Gabriel, explains how we adapt each year to get the very best from the crop.

“Gathering nature’s best ingredients and, with very little intervention, turning them into something exceptional is very rewarding. Each year, however, can bring very different growing conditions, especially with more unpredictable weather patterns, so it’s important to know how this affects crops and the way in which we gather them.

This year, for example, we are seeing a bumper crop of apples but, after a hot and dry summer, they are slightly later than in previous years. We know that apples need plenty of moisture, which eventually came in the tremendous downpours we experienced in September. Only then can they swell to just the right size and bring out the best flavour, so we carefully time when we pick them to ensure they are ready for pressing. The beauty of this year is the crop is proving well worth waiting for – the apples are delightfully sweet and the Luscombe team have declared the 2022 juice a particularly impressive one!

It's this attention to detail which, along with the expertise and passion of our growers, ensures only the very best quality ingredients go into our drinks. Apples have been grown at Luscombe since the 12th century, so we can confidently say we know a thing or two about growing them!”
